Week 2: Second day with students

February 4th, 2021

Today was my second day in the classroom with my MT and her 1st graders. We started out our day with some technological difficulties as my MT's internet connection went out halfway through our morning meeting when she was saying hi to the students. She quickly texted me and asked if I would take over saying good morning to each of them until she got everything situated. I was a bit nervous to lead the students but I was also excited to take over a bit of control and to help my MT out. I said good morning to the rest of the kids and asked how they were. When my MT finally got back on some of the kids pointed out that they were skipped. I did not mean to skip them but because I can't see everyone on my screen and I am still getting to know them I missed some. My MT has Popsicle sticks with the students names on them so she doesn't miss anyone so it is my goal for next week to make Popsicle sticks with the kids names on them so I don't forget anyone again.

As the day went on I got more involved. My MT put me in a breakout room during guided reading time with two students. We read a book called, "Peace and Quiet" and I helped them stay on track with it. They did a great job reading and then they worked on their activity sheet which I helped them with. I also talked with my MT about my teach days and she seemed thrilled about it and said those days would work. She did say though if they go back in March that the schedule would change slightly but it shouldn't mess with our plans. Overall, it was a good day and I continue to learn a lot from my MT and from observing.

  1. Sara that is cool that you got to take the reigns a little bit during your MT's technical difficulties. I think that's a good idea to write the students' names on Popsicle sticks so you can ensure you remember to call on everyone. I think I will also do that for my class!
I really hope we are able to get into the school when they go back. Hopefully everything goes according to plan and the students can return in March. That is when I will start with my lessons and I would prefer to do it in the actual classroom than online!

  2. Hi Sara! Its nice to learn that you have 1st graders! Glad you were able to help out your MT when she had technical issues, plus that was good practice for you. I may just steal that popsicle idea, in fact I will do that! 😃 . I can not wait for my MT to put me in breakout rooms with some of the kids. I am glad you had a good day. Take care!
