Week 2 - Morning Meetings - Responsive Classroom

This week was my first week to start observing Mondays and Thursdays. My MT's classroom follows a schedule that provides a routine for the students. The day starts off with a morning meeting. During the meeting, students have an opportunity to share whatever they feel like sharing. On Monday, they talked about their weekend and what they did in the snow. The teacher shared some of her dogs' photos playing in the snow and how much snow accumulated at her front door. The students shared news of making snowmen with their parents, and one student said that he did a volcano in the snow with his mom. After the students had some time to talk, the teacher reviewed the schedule for the day. The review gives students the chance to ask questions about the schedule and determine what is expected from them on that day. The MT incorporated small groups during the day, and the meeting allows students to write down who has a meeting on that day and who will work independently.

The morning meetings are essential for the students that provide constructive conversations. The meetings allow students to share important events from their lives and talk to the teacher and their peers. Also, listen and provide empathetic comments or ask clarifying questions. The meetings provide an opportunity for teamwork and additional time to practice social and emotional skills. Finally, the meetings allow the teacher to review the schedule and objectives for the day. The morning routine will definitely play an important part in my future classroom.

The children listened to a read-aloud, Thank You Omu! by Oge Mora, during the Monarch Reading.

  1. Hi Paulina, it's good to hear about your week in the classroom. I love that you are able to meet with the students and your MT two times during the week! Hopefully that helps you gain confidence when it comes time for you to teach! I love that you mentioned empathetic comments and ask clarifying questions. I see that a lot in my meeting with my MT, she is always providing extra time to make sure the children can ask questions and she can help them with anything they have difficulties with! Here's to another great week!! :)

  2. Hi Paulina,

That's awesome to hear that you have the opportunity to observe on Mondays as well as Thursdays! Any extra experience that you can get will definitely benefit you in the future! I think it will also help you build relationships with the students since you're able to spend more time with them. I really like the idea of the morning meetings and think its a great outlet for students to just talk with their friends and teachers. That helps a lot with SEL!
